Marsellis, Duran battle tough in State Wrestling Meet

Making the trip to Bakersfield for the State Wrestling Meet this past week, Escalon’s Yesenia Marsellis and Sofia Duran closed out their seasons. Matches were staged both Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 and 28.

Marsellis, a sophomore, went 1-2 at the event, said head coach Derek Scott.

“Her first two matches she wrestled good, but the third, after we had a really long layoff, she came out kind of flat,” Scott said of the 135-pounder.

Duran, a junior suiting up at 145 pounds, went 0-2 in her first appearance at the state meet.

“She was ahead in her first match and then she got caught in kind of a scramble,” noted Scott. “In her second match, she got what I thought was a really bad call and lost 1-0.”

The two were Escalon’s only representatives at the state meet.

Scott said they gained valuable experience and also got to see what it was like to wrestle in the intense atmosphere of the state meet; with hopes that both can return to the event next season.
