The regular season varsity football finale has plenty of implications for Escalon.

Hosting longtime rival Hughson, the Cougars can claim a share of the Trans-Valley League title with a win, going in at 3-1, the same record as Ripon and Modesto Christian.

“This Hughson team is scrappy, they are 1-3 in league but they play hard,” said Escalon head coach Mark Loureiro. “They have a young coaching staff and the kids play hard for them.”

Head coach is Vince Brown and he brings the 4-5 overall Huskies to Escalon looking to spoil the party as the Cougars aim for TVL honors. Escalon comes in at 5-4 overall and 3-1 in league, off a big win over Modesto Christian. Hughson took a 53-7 loss at the hands of Ripon.

“They are a little bit undersized,” Loureiro added of the Huskies, but said he knows they will be ready to go when the whistle blows on Friday night.

Top players for Hughson include running back/cornerback Carlos Arreola, 5-6, 135; quarterback/linebacker Josh Megee; top receiver Damien Contreras, 6-2, 170; running back/linebacker Cameron Ellak, 5-9, 195; and top linemen, tackle Seth Wright, 5-10, 175 and defensive end Andruw Mendes, 6-2, 210.

“We look for a great game,” Loureiro said.

Friday will be Senior Night for the team as well, with recognition of varsity football players and cheerleaders prior to kickoff.
