Escalon will have two representatives at the California State Wrestling Meet in Bakersfield; both are Lady Cougars.
Yesenia Marsellis and Sofia Duran earned their way to the State Meet, taking fifth place in their respective weight classes at the Masters Meet this past weekend in Stockton.
A total of 10 wrestlers from Escalon suited up for the two-day Masters Meet, five boys and five girls.
Marsellis, wrestling at 135 pounds, is a sophomore and she went 6-2.
“She won her last three matches by a point each,” head coach Derek Scott said of the clutch performance.
At 145 pounds, junior Duran had been dominating the last few weeks but ran into some tough competition at Masters.
“She won a really tough match for her fifth place,” Scott said.
The top five in each weight class at Masters move on to the State Meet.
Junior Miroslava Torres wrestled at 115 pounds and just missed out on qualifying for state, going 5-3 and finishing sixth. Senior Angeline Mills, at 110 pounds, took eighth place with a 4-3 record.
Senior Melanie Carrillo went 2-2 at 190 pounds and did not place.
Marsellis, Duran, Torres and Mills all came home with medals.
“For our boys, four of them won matches and two moved on to the second day but none placed,” Scott explained.
Luca Cerasi (144 pounds) and Conner McDowell (132 pounds) – both coming off individual Divisional championships – made it to the second day. Cerasi, a senior, ended his high school career with a 3-2 record at Masters.
“He really deserved a better ending than that,” Scott said of the talented and decorated Cerasi, with a couple of divisional crowns and several tournament championships under his belt.
McDowell went 2-2 but has the chance to come back next season. Both Cougars lost in the round to place and did not advance.
Also competing at Masters were Jacob Morales, 120 pounds; Houston Sizuela, 126; and Leo Carrillo, 175 pounds.
Competition for the Lady Cougar wrestlers in Bakersfield runs Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 26 through Feb. 28.
