Members of the Escalon Wrestling Club hit the mats for plenty of action during February. Here is a recap of the action for the young grapples.

 

SUNDAY, FEB. 8

At the Tokay Tournament in Lodi, there were a couple of first place finishers for Escalon.

Austin Sanchez went 3-0 in the 10u age group, 75-80 pounds, for a gold medal. In the 12u age group, Brody Gentry went 3-0 in the 70-75-80 pound bracket, also taking a gold.

Keegan Lewellen finished second in the 10u 111-pound category, going 3-1 to earn a silver medal.

Taking home fourth place bronze medal honors were Josiah Freitas, 6u, 48 pounds; Aiden Robinson Garcia, 10u, 70-75 pounds; and Anthony Teicheira, 15u, 100-106.

Also wrestling were Steven Saunders, 6u, 44 pounds; Luke Sanchez, 10u, 70 pounds; Cody Gentry, 10u, 70-75 pounds; and Garrett Gaines, 12u, 70-75-80 pounds.

 

SUNDAY, FEB. 15

Wrestling Club members traveled to nearby Ceres for the Central Valley Tournament and six came home with medals.

Taking second place was Cody Gentry, 10u, 75 pounds; silver medal. In third place, earning a bronze medal, was Antonio Munoz, 8u, 50 pounds. Fourth place finishers also receiving bronze medals included River Vasquez, 10u, 75 pounds; Austin Sanchez, 10u, 80 pounds; Brody Gentry, 12u, 80 pounds; and Anthony Teicheira, 15u, 106 pounds.

Also wrestling were Jameson Garcia, 6u, 40 pounds; Josiah Freitas, 6u, 48 pounds; and, in the10u division, Keegan Lewellen, 111 pounds; Connor Lohman, 99 pounds; Aiden Garcia, 75 pounds; and Luke Sanchez, 70 pounds.

 

SUNDAY, FEB. 22

The Zone 2 State Qualifier was hosted at Oakdale High School on Feb. 22.

While the top four finishers in each bracket get medals, the top eight at this event in each weight bracket qualified to go to the state tournament in Clovis later this month. Thirteen of the Escalon Wrestling Club members qualified to move on.

State Tournament qualifiers included:

6u division – Steven Saunders, 44 pounds, seventh place; Josiah Freitas, 47 pounds, third place, bronze medal; Leonidas Watson, 47 pounds, sixth; Maximus Watson, 66 pounds, second place, silver medal.

10u division – Austin Sanchez, 80 pounds, third place bronze medal; Keegan Lewellen, 109 pounds, seventh place.

12u girls division – Kennedy Van Dyk, 70-80 pounds, second place, silver medal.

12u division – Garrett Gaines, 80 pounds, seventh; Brody Gentry, 80 pounds, seventh; Logan Lanza, 162 pounds, second place, silver medal.

15u division – Anthony Teicheira, 101 pounds, third place, bronze medal; Gunnar Hawes, 128 pounds, fourth place, bronze medal; Aiden Yates-Perreira, 156 pounds, fifth place.

Those wrestlers competing in the state qualifier but not moving on were Luke Sanchez, 10u, 70 pounds; and River Vasquez, 10u, 75 pounds.
