Edward Joseph Nunes peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family at Manteca Hospital on April 21, 2025. Edward was born January 29, 1938 to parents John Machado Nunes and Mary Louise Nunes in Byron on a dairy behind the Catholic Church where he was baptized and received his First Holy Communion. Ed moved with his family to Escalon when he was in the fourth grade and worked on their dairy. He went to St. Patrick’s Church where he attended CCD classes and was confirmed. Ed played football and graduated from Escalon High School in 1956. He married Lorraine Brasil in 1960 and they had six children. They were all raised on the Teixeira Nunes Dairy. Lorraine died in 1977, Ed kept busy working hard and raising his family. In 1986 he married Angelina Cardoso and welcomed into his family Luis Paul, Cecelia and Elizabeth. Their family continued to grow with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ed and Angelina were married for almost 40 years.

Ed was President of C.P.S.C. (Stockton), F.E.S. (Oakdale) and Our Lady of Fatima Celebration (Escalon). He enjoyed going on routes raising money for the Portuguese organizations. Ed was one of the founders of the Escalon Azores Band. He loved having a good time at festas and family gatherings, dancing to the jitterbug. Ed looked forward to bowling every Friday on his dairy bowling league with some of his closest family and friends. Ed was a very outgoing individual who loved to travel to Pismo Beach for the Saint Anthony’s Festa and annual Super Bowl party with family and friends. He made many memorable trips, including visiting where his family came from. He was blessed to visit Terceira, Azores with his siblings. Ed was a great teacher, showing others how to farm and bring in a good crop. Ed loved his cows, farming and especially driving his tractor. Most of all he loved his faith, family and friends.

Ed was a wonderful Son, Grandson, Brother, Godchild, Uncle, Cousin, Godfather, Brother-in-law, Father-in-law and friend. Most of all Ed was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. We will always remember his unconditional love, affection and generous support. We will miss his amazing blue eyes, contagious smile and warm hugs.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents John Machado Nunes and Mary Louise Nunes; first wife Lorraine Nunes; and siblings John Nunes, Mary Augusto, and Eleanor Vaz. Ed is survived by his wife Angelina Nunes. His children: Edward James Nunes – Escalon, Nadine Nunes – Modesto, Natalie Nunes – Lodi, Everett Nunes (Jennifer) – Escalon, Norine Nunes O’Sullivan (Jack, Sr.) – South Carolina, Elliot Nunes – Escalon, Luis Paul Cardoso – Escalon, Cecelia Cardoso Qarqat (Emron) – Hughson and Elizabeth Cardoso – Oakdale. His Grandchildren: Jessica Welsh (Paul), Erica Nunes, James Nunes (Fallon), Edward Joseph Nunes II, Donna Nunes, Evan Nunes, Brock Nunes (Grace), Alyssa Nunes, Rylie Pascoe (Bryce), Jack O’Sullivan, Jr., Savannah Qarqat, Ashleigh Nunes, Emily O’Sullivan, Jocelyn Qarqat and Eileen O’Sullivan. His Great Grandchildren: Kianah Nunes, Reina Nunes, Regan Nunes and Edward J. Welsh. His Godchildren Kenney Pombo, Anna Augusto, Valerie Vaz, John Nunes, Jr., Ed Teixeira, Arthur Teixeira, and Miguel Lopes. And his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Deegan Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Nunes Family. A viewing will be held Wednesday, May 7, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Deegan Funeral Chapel, 1441 San Joaquin Street, Escalon. Thursday, May 8, 2025 at 10 a.m. will be the Rosary and Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, 19399 CA 120, Ripon. Burial at St. John’s Cemetery. A celebration of Ed’s life will follow at the Escalon Azores Band Hall, 1436 First Street, Escalon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Our Lady of Fatima Celebration, P.O. Box 332, Escalon, CA 95320, in memory of Edward J. Nunes.
