Whirlwind of activity arrives this weekend

Weather forecasters are predicting sunny skies and temperatures peaking at about 80 degrees, setting the stage for a couple of favorite annual events in the city this weekend.

First up, on Saturday, Oct. 4, the 33rd annual citywide yard sale will bring plenty of bargain hunters to town, with the sale hours set from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Maps will be available at City Hall, 2060 McHenry Ave., and posted on the City of Escalon Facebook page to allow for treasure hunters to find sales scattered throughout the city. Many residents having the sales paid the $5 fee to have their address included on the official yard sale map. City officials said several dozen sale locations will be featured.

Everything from clothing to books, home décor to sporting equipment can be found at dozens of sales from one end of the city to the other.

Meanwhile, as part of the citywide sale, the Friends of the Escalon Library will also be hosting their “Pre-Loved Book Sale” at the library, 1540 Second St., from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be books for all ages and in all genres, available for low prices, along with some antique books as well.

All ages are also invited to attend the Escalon Chamber of Commerce event, Harvest on Main, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 5 from noon to 3 p.m.

“We have so many great things at Harvest on Main this year. We are giving away over 120 large pumpkins for decorating. We have a great decoration station/carving station for pumpkins,” explained Chamber board member Megan McNinch. “We are having live music by Kenny Moore, a costume contest with seven age groups and have added adults as well.”

Several dozen vendors with a variety of wares are scheduled to be on hand, setting up around the city’s Main Street Park.

For the younger age groups taking part in the costume contest, the 12 and under winners will receive a golden Halloween medal and winners for the age brackets 13-plus will win two tickets to the Haunted Hay Ride later this month at Jacob Myers Park, courtesy of the City of Riverbank.

Serving as judges for the costume contest will be Miss Escalon and her court.

“All participants will get a goodie bag. We also have added trick or treating at each non-food related vendor site and have free trick or treat bags at the Chamber booth,” McNinch noted.

All those planning to attend on Sunday are encouraged to come in costume.

There will also be face painting, merchandise vendors, a full food court with hot food, beverages, treats and more.

A special giveaway will net the winner four tickets to Dutch Hollow Farms for their Halloween festivities; the drawing will be at 2:30 p.m. on the Main Street stage.

“To enter you just stop with the vendors and get a ticket to put in the giveaway,” McNinch said. “We also have a few games for the kids to play for free including a pumpkin and ghost ring toss and some festive bean bag toss games as well. I’m excited for the new add-ins this year and we will be doing more decorations throughout the park as well.”

All are welcome; kids will have the opportunity to carve and decorate a pumpkin on site, which they can then take home after the Harvest on Main event.
