All in the community are encouraged to attend the upcoming Veterans Day parade, memorial ceremony and barbecue chicken lunch, all scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 11 in Escalon.

First on the schedule is the downtown parade, which will line up beginning on Coley Avenue. The parade steps off at 10:30 a.m., moving from Coley to turn on to First and then from First to Main Street, continuing past the city’s Main Street Park before disbanding.

Serving as Grand Marshal this year will be Escalon American Legion Post 263 Commander, Mike Christensen.

He has been with the local Post for the past few years, joining shortly after moving here. He previously lived in both the Sacramento and Santa Cruz areas.

Christensen spent 24 years in the U.S. Army and has focused on recruiting new members for the local post, which he said still needs more support from younger veterans. He encourages all interested to attend an upcoming meeting to learn more about the local American Legion.

The regular monthly meetings of Post 263 are the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the post rooms, 1531 Second St.

Following the parade on Tuesday, watchers are encouraged to move on to the Escalon Community Center, where the memorial ceremony will take place at the Memorial Wall beginning at 11:30 a.m.

That program typically includes a guest speaker, musical selections, the laying of memorial wreaths and a 21-gun salute.

Following the conclusion of the ceremony, a barbecued chicken lunch will be available from noon to 3 p.m.

Lunch tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or pre-sale by contacting Fallon Nunes at 209-484-3641. Diners can choose to eat in or take their meal to go.
