Summer sees prices on the rise at pumps

After enjoying a few weeks of declines, average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 17.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.34/gallon on June 23, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto.

Prices in Modesto are still 40.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 16.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 16.1 cents in the last week and stands at $3.64 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.84 while the most expensive was $5.41, a difference of $1.57/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.09 while the highest was $6.58, a difference of $3.49/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has risen 9.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.18/gallon as of June 23. The national average is unchanged from a month ago and stands 23.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest Modesto price of $6.21 was on June 23, 2022 while the highest U.S average of $4.94 also came that same year. The lowest Modesto price in the last 10 years was $2.72 per gallon, recorded in 2016 and the lowest U.S. average of $2.15 per gallon was record on June 23, 2020.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.45/gallon, up 9.0 cents from $4.36; Oakland - $4.73, up 2.1 cents per gallon from $4.71; and San Jose- $4.69/gallon, up 1.1 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.67/gallon.

“Few pumps have been immune, with nearly all states seeing gas prices rise over the last week. Additionally, average diesel prices recorded their largest weekly jump since August 2023,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “For now, motorists should anticipate a continued steady climb in prices, with the national average likely to increase another seven to 15 cents this week, while diesel could rise by 10 to 20 cents. These forecasts remain fluid and could shift quickly depending on global developments, so we encourage motorists to stay tuned to GasBuddy for the latest updates and insights.”
