Senior recognition due at Friday night opener

Changing things up a bit, the first preseason football game will be celebrated as Senior Night for Escalon High school varsity football players and cheerleaders.

Typically, that recognition has come toward the end of the season, at one of the last regular season home games, but the decision was made to move it this year.

“Trans-Valley League games are so important, we decided we didn’t want it on an October night,” varsity head coach and EHS Athletic Director Andrew Beam said of the change.

This way, he noted, by saluting the senior players, cheerleaders and recognizing the support from their families, they can enjoy the limelight without the pressure of a league contest – with possible TVL title or playoff hopes on the line – looming.

“We can start by celebrating our seniors for this season and for their senior year,” Beam said.

Escalon will play host to Rodriguez High School of Fairfield for the Friday night, Aug. 22 preseason opener.

The Mustangs are a Division 2 team, coming off an 11-1 season.

“We have never played them before,” Beam said. “They are very athletic; this will be a good test.”

Off the field, Beam said the popular ‘Cougar Cards’ sold each football season to benefit the program are still available; you can contact Beam at the high school to purchase a card, at a cost of $20.

“It has a lot of great deals and discounts to a number of local businesses,” Beam said.

Supplies are limited.

The start times for the Friday games have also been pushed back due to the forecast of triple digit heat for Aug. 22. The JV game will kick off at 5:30 p.m., varsity is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start, depending on the length of the Senior Night festivities.

“We’re eager to get back on the football field and get moving in the right direction,” Beam said.
