Pump prices jump by a few pennies

After dropping for a couple of weeks, the average gasoline prices in Modesto have risen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.56/gallon as of Monday, April 28. That, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto, which shows that prices in Modesto are 6.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 70.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 2.0 cents in the last week and stands at $3.49 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $4.05/gallon while the most expensive was $5.19, a difference of $1.14/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.50 while the highest was $8.29, a difference of $4.79/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline was unchanged in the last week, averaging $3.10/gallon on April 28. The national average is down 3.8 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 52.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest price of $5.35 per gallon in Modesto was recorded on April 28, 2022 and the lowest was $2.43 in 2020. National average highest price of $4.15 per gallon was also on April 28, 2022 and the lowest of $1.74 per gallon was recorded in 2020.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.62/gallon, up 6.3 cents from last week’s $4.55; Oakland - $4.83, down 5.4 cents from $4.88; and San Jose - $4.80, down 5.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.86/gallon.

“Average gasoline prices in the U.S. have been volatile over the past week, with roughly half of the 50 states seeing prices decline while the other half experienced increases,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “Oil prices, which had fallen into the $50 per barrel range at the height of Trump’s trade war, have since rallied and are now holding in the low $60s, leading to rising gas prices in some states. For now, I expect the national average to bounce around in the $3.10 to $3.20 per gallon range over the coming week, with a continued mixed bag for consumers—about half of the states may see prices inch lower, while the other half could experience increases.”
