At the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7, District 5 Supervisor Robert Rickman brought forward a Proclamation recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which was presented to Director of Public Health Services Renee Sunseri. The Proclamation underscores the county’s continued commitment to raising awareness, promoting early detection, and supporting those impacted by breast cancer throughout the community.

This October, San Joaquin County joins the nation in recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time to honor the survivors, support those courageously fighting, and remember the loved ones lost.

“Early detection saves lives,” Supervisor Rickman stated. “We encourage everyone to take time this month to schedule regular screenings, talk with loved ones, and support organizations providing care and research.”

Supervisor Rickman represents Escalon on the county board. Breast cancer, the supervisor said, touches families throughout San Joaquin County.

The Proclamation stated, in part: “Whereas, there are several types of breast cancer which are divided into non-invasive and invasive types which can be diagnosed at different stages of development and can grow at different rates; and Whereas, the American Cancer Society established Breast Cancer Awareness Month in 1985 to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer; and Whereas, between 1989 and 2024 there was a 44% drop in breast cancer death rates, which is largely attributed to early detection and treatment,” the county board officially proclaimed the month of October 2025 as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in San Joaquin County and “supports and encourages efforts” which will improve the health and wellbeing of all.

“Together — through awareness, compassion, and action — we can bring hope and healing to countless lives,” Supervisor Rickman noted. “Let’s stand strong, wear pink, and continue the fight for a future free of breast cancer.”
