What better way to get into the holiday spirit than by hearing and singing songs of the season and dancing? That’s what members, guests and prospective members of the American Association of University Women, Oakdale, Riverbank, Escalon Branch (AAUW-ORE) are invited to do on Thursday evening, Dec. 11. Festivities will start with a social time at 6 p.m. in the Escalon Library Community Room.
Local accordionist Gene Bartolomei of Escalon and father of AAUW member, Cindy Moreno, will then regale the audience about his favorite instrument – the accordion, and will add festive cheer by playing several holiday tunes. He has been playing the accordion for over 80 years and has been teaching accordion for over 65 years. In the 1960’s and 1970’s he had over 150 students, conducted several accordion bands, which gave concerts and recitals at different venues in Stockton. Bartolomei even played with Myron Floren – of The Lawrence Welk Show – at some of those concerts.
Once the audience has warmed up their voices, they will be invited to circle up and warm up the rest of their bodies through dance. AAUW-ORE member and longtime folk dancer and teacher, Judy Kropp, will teach three easy to learn, no partner dances from Sweden, Turkey and Serbia. Kropp recommends: “Wear comfortable shoes and a cool top for a 20-minute workout to interesting music.” She also says that people can dance holding onto or sitting in chairs.
This meeting and holiday celebration is open to members, guests and those interested in possibly joining the organization. The Escalon Library is at 1540 Second St., Escalon. Individuals interested in attending or who want more information about the meeting or AAUW’s mission are asked to RSVP by emailing membership director, Gail Marganelli at gmarganelli@att.net.
