The 62nd annual Pumpkin Roll will take place in Knights Ferry on Sunday, Nov. 2; always hosted the first Sunday after Halloween.
Contest chair Tracy Griesner reports that the object of the game is to start at the corner of Main and Dent streets and roll your favorite pumpkin toward the firehouse. Winner in each division is the one who gets the closest to the chalked finish line.
Five categories are offered, from preschool to senior citizens, with male and female trophy winners in each.
George Perry and Sons of Manteca, one of the area’s largest growers, donates a pickup load of pumpkins each year for use at the event. Sign-ups start at 10:45 a.m. in front of the Knights Ferry Community Club; a small donation is asked for the registration fee. Those up to five years old do their rolling on the tennis court starting at noon. The Main Street main event begins at 1 p.m. for those six and older; the senior citizen group always rolls first.
Also on Sunday, the IOOF Hall on Main Street will have its first Sunday of the month pancake breakfast served from 8 a.m. until noon at a cost of $10.
A craft fair with holiday gift ideas will be set up in the Club House and on the tennis court. Vendor chair Megan Peterson said there are 35 booths this year. The Knights Ferry Garden Club will have their famous pumpkin roll desserts on sale, perfect for Thanksgiving.
Also, the Knights Ferry Museum will be open, upstairs in Miller’s Hall. There is a lift available for anyone that has trouble climbing the stairs to the visit the museum. The Ice Cream Shop and the Art Studio will be open as well.
This will be a great opportunity to see if the salmon have made it up the Stanislas River as far as Knights Ferry for spawning. Officials also remind visitors that the historic covered bridge remains closed to pedestrians.
