In the Central Valley, mold isn’t just a seasonal nuisance—it’s a year-round threat hiding behind drywall, under sinks, and inside HVAC systems. With the region’s mix of foggy mornings, leaky roofs, and tightly sealed homes, moisture can linger long enough to invite unwanted fungal guests.
September is observed nationally as Mold Awareness Month. Here’s how to spot mold, stop it, and stay ahead of it.
Know The Signs
Musty odors even when everything looks clean
Discoloration on walls, ceilings, or window sills—especially green, black, or white patches
Condensation on windows or pipes
Persistent allergy symptoms like sneezing, coughing, or itchy eyes indoors
Prevention Starts With Ventilation
Run bathroom and kitchen fans during and after use
Open windows when weather permits to increase airflow
Use a dehumidifier in basements or poorly ventilated rooms
Stop Moisture At The Source
Fix leaky roofs, pipes, and appliances immediately
Check for standing water in crawl spaces or under sinks
Seal gaps around windows and doors to prevent rain intrusion
Clean Smart, Not Just Hard
Scrub small mold patches with soap and water, not bleach (which doesn’t penetrate porous surfaces)
Remove and replace moldy drywall, carpet, or insulation
Never paint over mold—it just traps the problem
Know Your Rights
If you’re renting and mold makes your unit uninhabitable, California law requires landlords to remediate it promptly under SB 655. Document everything and report issues in writing.
