With plenty of complaints about the setting off of illegal fireworks around the community over the long holiday weekend, one case remains under investigation.
A fire in a field in the 18000 block of Campbell Avenue, just off Highway 120 behind the Lopez Imports business on the east end of the city, was kept to roughly an acre and a half, and the cause is suspected as being illegal fireworks.
Escalon Fire and Escalon Police are conducting a joint investigation into the fire.
The original call came in late Saturday night, July 5, with fire responding shortly before 11 p.m.
The fire had a “moderate rate of spread,” according to fire officials, and there was no report of damage to any structures.
Firefighters returned to the scene twice on Sunday, July 6 – the first call was about 10:20 a.m. but there was no fire located, and officials believe it was just lingering smoke in the area. Another call came in shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday but, again, there was no fire at the site.
However, with the cause believed to have been illegal fireworks, police and fire investigators are looking in to the case.
And on Friday, July 4, Escalon police officers responded to more than a dozen fireworks violation complaints around the city, ranging from the area of Danielle and Genevieve to Vine and Jill, along Highway 120, on Coley Avenue, in the area of Mitchell and California, Main and Fourth, Harvest Lane and Stanislaus Street, Judith Court, Jackson Avenue, Countrywood and Sophie Lane, and Tracey Lane.
