Ceremony at fire station remembers 9-11 victims
E ceremony

Thursday, Sept. 11 will bring the annual 9-11 memorial service in Escalon.

Hosted at the Escalon Fire Station on Coley Avenue, the “Community Moment of Silence and Prayer” has been put on for the last several years. Fire Chief Rick Mello serves as emcee, with Escalon firefighters, police and ambulance personnel all invited to attend, as well as those from neighboring agencies.

It is also open to the public and Mello said it is a way to “always remember” those who were lost, not only in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 but also those lives lost in the War on Terror that followed. Those included Navy Corpsman James R. Layton of Escalon, who was killed in action on Sept. 8, 2009 in Afghanistan while tending to wounded soldiers. He was later posthumously named as an honorary member of the Escalon Fire Department.

There is seating available for the brief program, which begins at 9:11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11. The fire station is at 1749 Coley Ave., Escalon.
