With five goals in a Tuesday game at Modesto Christian, the varsity Escalon soccer team earned a 5-1 win and kept their hold on first place in the Trans-Valley League. They added another win later in the week, getting past Ripon 2-0 on Thursday.

At Modesto Christian, the boys were up 4-0 at the half.

"It was a good, workmanlike effort," coach Chris Oliveira said. "They took our spot in the playoffs last year, that's how we see it, so it was nice to get out there and get a win."

The game on Sept. 25 closed out the first round of the TVL season, with the Cougars going 5-0 in that round.

"We were disappointed we let them have a goal, we were ahead 4-0 when they scored," Oliveira added.

Freddy Mancilla had two first half goals, with one each from Ramon Valencia and Francisco Martinez. Assists were from Julio Farias, who had two, and one each from Jose Lopez and Brian Arotca.

In the second half, Oscar Ramirez scored for Escalon with an assist from Joel Vasquez.

Cougar keeper Bill Cervantes had seven saves.

"He was fairly busy," Oliveira said.

Thursday, hosting Ripon, the teams battled through the first half with Escalon getting on the board in the final minute, Freddy Mancilla scoring the goal off an assist from Jose Mancilla.

"So at halftime, we were up 1-0, it was like the Riverbank game when we were down a goal and it's a big mental thing, to be tied instead of down or ahead instead of tied going into the halftime," Oliveira said.

Ripon was coming off a win over Riverbank that solidified their hold on second place and Oliveira said the Cougars were anxious to keep them at bay.
