Varsity Soccer Boys Defeat Hughson, Riverbank In League Play
After a thorough thrashing of an undermanned Hughson squad, Escalon's varsity soccer boys headed to Riverbank and came away with a 2-1 victory over the host Bruins to stay atop the standings of the Trans-Valley League.

"The only person with a better week than me was Marg Jackson," coach Chris Oliveira joked, noting that the Times editor picked up two prizes in a raffle drawing at the Sept. 15 Trivia Bee event while Oliveira saw his team win a couple of crucial games ... but lost out on winning the raffle prize he wanted.

In Tuesday action at home, the Cougars upended Hughson by an 8-0 final, getting two goals from Freddy Mancilla and single tallies from six other players.

"Hughson is way down right now," Oliveira said of last year's Trans-Valley League title winner. "They didn't have a preseason and their first game was their first league game."

With a different marking period than some other TVL schools, Oliveira said Hughson could get some players eligible for the second round of the TVL games and they should improve as the season goes along.

This time, though, Escalon had its way with the visiting Huskies.

"It was 7-0 at the half and we were already trying to put on the brakes," Oliveira said.

But with the big lead, the team was constantly putting in subs and Oliveira said it just wasn't fair to ask the subs not to play aggressively.

Mancilla had two goals, with one each from Jose Bueno, Julio Farias, Justin Gutierrez, Fernando Munoz, Ramon Valencia and Nathan Vieira. Getting assists were Jose Mancilla with three, Jose Lopez with two and one each from Farias, Armando Becerra and Bill Cervantes.

Cervantes was in goal for the first half and had a couple of saves, Fernando Munoz made three saves in goal for the Cougars in the second half.
